Gooseneck Lights & Indy Pendants Add Chic Style to British Townhouse

America isn’t the only place where gooseneck lights or vintage pendant lights have gained popularity in hip and stylish homes. This growing trend has gained traction with our friends across the pond in England as well.

On a recent post from Remodelista, readers viewed photographs of the Falmouth Townhouse, a Georgian style boutique/hotel and bar. The Falmouth Townhouse is located in the vibrant and bustling seaside community of Cornwall, England.

Kathryn Tyler of Linea Studio designed Falmouth Townhouse’s interior. Tyler told Remodelista she tries to source as much as she can locally and the palette of sea blues and tree greens was inspired by the colors and textures she encounters during her walks around the local beach.

In the bar area, Tyler used a large collection of vintage light bulb pendants. Spread out like a giant octopus, the pendants are draped in a circular shape and fan out to light nearly the entire room. Similar designs can be brought into your home as well by choosing the Barn Light Indy Industrial Pendant. You can create this dazzling effect by using a mix of  Nostalgic Edison Bulbs or stylish Half Chrome Decorative Bulbs. These throwback bulbs are available in several different sizes and styles and easily create a mix of modern with early 19th and early 20th century design.

Industrial Acrylic Pendants Add Funky Charm, Character

The kitchen table is often the focal point of the most popular room in the house. This is likely the one piece of furniture that everyone in the house uses every day. From pancake breakfasts and family dinners to the party goers that inevitably migrate here, the kitchen table is the heart of this room.

Lighting for this table should not only be functional but special in its own right such as this beautiful, industrial-style ceiling pendant. Much like Barn Light Electric’s Sector Pendant, this fixture offers a nostaglic design that instantly adds a funky charm and character to the whole room.

The Sector Pendant, found in our Barn Pendants Collection of ceiling lighting, comes with your choice of shade style. If you’d like to give your light a more decorative, historic feel, go for the ribbed acrylic shade such as this one which borrows its key features from vintage industrial lighting designs. For a sleeker, more modern look, choose a glossy metallic finish for the top cap. The Sector comes in an array of colors and finishes such as classic black, satin steel, and copper.

The Cradle Pendant also offers a similar look with its clear ribbed acrylic lens with widths ranging from 14 inches to a very generous 26 inches. The larger sizes provide a great span of light yet the ribbed lens does a fine job in softening the light that projects outward. Again, if you want a more vintage look to your light, stick with the glass shade but if you have stainless appliances in a modern kitchen, you may want to opt for one of the metallic finishes such as galvanized, painted steel, or satin steel.

Both the Sector and the Cradle pendants can be cord hung with your choice of black or white cord, or on a stem mount ranging from 6 inches to four feet long. And if you need a flush mount, we can do that too!

How to decorate a nursery in a gender-neutral style

There was a time when nursery design was strictly dictated by the gender of the baby who was to sleep there. Rooms for baby girls were awash in delicate pink and adorned with lace curtains and bows. Baby boys slept in pale blue nurseries embellished with teddy bears, dinosaurs and race cars.
Times have changed, however, and modern parents have a wide range of colours, themes and textures from which to choose. Unique possibilities for gender-neutral nursery design abound. From selecting a bold colour for the nursery walls to finding an exciting print in childrens Roman blinds, there are many ways to create an attractive, gender-neutral environment.
Colour choice is one of the most important considerations in the creation of a gender-neutral nursery. Sophisticated combinations such as red and sage green or brown and pale blue are suitable for both girls and boys and will wear well as the child gets older. Neutral palettes featuring tans, whites and creams create a light and clean impression that will complement any home decor. Contrasting bright colours are suitable for both genders and serve to stimulate the baby’s developing brain.
Some parents who find bright colours overwhelming on the nursery walls might select a window covering in a bold print to brighten up a neutral palette. Childrens Roman blinds come in a variety of colours and bold patterns, and their room-darkening qualities are conducive to peaceful sleep. Plaids, stripes and bold colours will maintain their charm to the toddler years and beyond.
There is an almost endless variety of themes from which to choose for a gender-neutral nursery. More parents are looking beyond the traditional princess theme for girls and sports prints for boys. Those with an artistic flair might consider painting a mural on one of the nursery walls. Themes featuring activities important to the family or highlighting an ethnic heritage will be meaningful to the child as he or she gets older.
Characters from nursery rhymes and books work well in any baby’s room, regardless of gender. The Gingerbread Man, Humpty Dumpty and Curious George are all fun choices. Libraries and book stores serve as good sources of inspiration. Hanging art prints and posters featuring characters is an easy way to build on the room’s theme. Animals and nature themes are also good choices and may be incorporated into window treatments, bedding, artwork, lampshades and murals.
Fabric choices for the nursery can also be kept gender-neutral. Lace has traditionally been associated with girls, while corduroy and flannel have masculine connotations. Simple, gender-neutral fabrics such as fleece and cotton are attractive, comfortable and functional. Parents should always consider ease of cleaning when selecting fabrics for the baby’s room. When it comes to patterns, polka dots, stripes and geometric prints all work well.
Gender-neutral nurseries are hip, practical and present a great opportunity to create a fun and stimulating environment for the new baby. Since a good deal of the baby’s time will be spent there, the nursery should be a comfortable and attractive haven for both baby and parent.

What Different Styles of Curtains can I hang in my Home?

There is no better way to make a bold statement in one’s home decor than by choosing the right window treatment. If chosen correctly, one’s choice of window coverings can dramatically enhance the appearance of any room. There are dozens of different styles, colours, textures and varieties available that can either soften or add drama to the interior.
There are as many different factors to consider when choosing which style to hang.
The first determination that should be made is based on what room of the home needs the curtains. Bedrooms are often thought of as places of comfort where one may retreat for rest and relaxation. Some of the curtain options for the bedroom include soft sheers that can diffuse the light while still providing privacy, perhaps encased in solid silk tab topped or gathered opaque draperies that can be closed completely over the sheers to block out the light. Wooden blinds are also a good choice for their ability to both allow in the light or, to completely shut it out.
Some of the currently popular curtain styles for the main living areas of a home are long drapes that are hung from just below the ceiling and allowed to pool naturally on the floor below. These type of curtains work very well when framing a picture window that has a nice view, as they perform the same job as a literal picture frame. Another type of curtain that is well-suited for the living room or den is the full height curtain, the top of which hides behind a cornice or valance. These curtains have the effect of letting the people in the room only see the soft, gentle folds of the draperies without seeing any of the rod or accompanying hardware. The pencil pleat curtain is also a popular choice for the living room. Some of the new patterned vertical blinds also work, especially for the more casual living area such as a den.
Finding a good window treatment for the kitchen normally involves some way to allow maximum light into the room. Depending upon the decor of the kitchen, this can include a decorative curtain that stays open all the time, created from semi-sheer or sheer fabric. Country themed kitchens often have simple cafe curtains that are gathered onto a rod. A more contemporary kitchen might have a more sheik tab-topped curtain or some of the new styles of bamboo curtains that are made from either split bamboo, in the form of shades, or of bamboo woven fabric that is huge right now. Tie tops are a choice that informal and quite practical for the kitchen.
Bathroom window coverings, of course, tend to be centered around the amount of privacy they provide, as well as how well they can stand up to moisture. There are many cheerful and durable plastic or vinyl choices. The short, grommet top curtain also works well in this environment, provided it is constructed from fabric that is water resistant.

Five ways to add style to a rental property

Don’t let the limitations of your rental agreement limit your sense of style. Just because you don’t own your place doesn’t mean that you can’t make it your own. Here are a few ways to personalize your space while still respecting the rules of your lease.
1. Paint : In most cases, a landlord is fine with you painting, as long as you are willing to paint it back to a neutral color when you are ready to move out. What better way to show your style than through the use of color? An added benefit to painting is that it is inexpensive and can be done yourself over a weekend.
2. Invest in Artwork : It doesn’t matter where you live or how often you move, artwork can always be taken with you, making it a great investment for years to come. Because there is a wide variety of art available, it is also a great way to show off your unique style.
3. Buy Universal Furniture : There is no point in spending a lot of money on furniture that will only work in your current space. Instead of purchasing an oversize sectional, try opting for a couch and chairs or one of the new modular couches that can easily be rearranged in a different home.
4. Accessorize : Tie the theme of a room together with fun and stylish accessories. You can buy items here and there when you have some extra room in your budget and they can be changed out as your style or the seasons change.
5. Make the Most of What You Have : Sure, you can’t change the carpet, tile, cabinets, or fixtures in your rental property. You can however, make the most of what you have by choosing towels and accessories that maximize their potential. By embracing that which you can not change and incorporating some of the things that you love within them, you may find that rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens, which have more limitations than others, can fit right in with the rest of your place.
